Classic Car Facts

“Skyliner … most distinctive car under the sun

These are the words that Ford used to introduce its exciting Crestline Skyliner in 1954.  Featuring a unique tinted acrylic glass transparent panel that encompasses the entire front half of the passenger’s compartment, just 13,144 were sold in 1954, its single year of production.  If you’re looking for a cruiser that is truly rare, this is it!

Finished in Sheridan Blue Metallic, this Skyliner’s finish has a nice luster that is further enhanced by its abundance of chrome and brightwork that handsomely highlight its exterior lines.  The chrome is in overall good condition, with some minor pitting and wear evident.  Providing additional distinction is its unique gold cross-hatched sail panel emblazoned with the Ford crest.  A handsome “V-8” badge on the front fenders lets passersby know that this beauty has power to spare.  Wide white wall tires dating from 2020 and optional full wheel discs complete the look.

The interior of this Skyliner features handsome pleated seats that were recovered at one point in time in black vinyl.  The commanding dashboard features Ford’s unique “Astra-dial” control panel, the centerpiece of which is its speedometer featuring a transparent hood that lets sunlight in from behind for excellent visibility.  A machine-tooled recessed panel neatly houses controls for the lights, windshield wipers, choke, lighter, radio and clock, as well as the fuel and temperature gauges and tell-tail lights.  Everything a driver needs is right at hand!  Rare-for-the-time options include “Power-lift” windows and a 4-way power seat. And above head, the scenery is always changing with its larger-than-life transparent roof panel.  To call this a sunroof would be an understatement; driving in the “bubble” is truly a unique experience!

Under the hood you will find a “Y-block” 239 CID V-8 mated to an optional Fordomatic automatic transmission which provide plenty of power.  Optional “Master-guide” power steering and “Swift Sure” power brakes are a boon to today’s drivers and will keep you firmly in control on the road.  Its dual exhaust system features “cherry bomb” mufflers which provide just the right amount of rumble.  The 5-digit odometer shower approximately 5,200 miles, but total mileage is unknown.

A few items of note are that the clock, radio and windshield wipers are not currently working.  In addition, the optional back-up lights remain on when the car is running.  Included with sale are rear wheel skirts, vinyl shade panels that clip inside the car to shade the glass top, and a 1954 Ford Shop Manual Supplement.

If a truly unique cruiser with plenty of 1950s style is what you’re after, this 1954 Crestline Skyliner is the one for you!
