Classic Car Facts

Lustrous Black on Black … Buckets and console … Leather … Power windows, locks, seat, antenna … Factory A/C and cruise control … Previously owned by Al Lerner …

In 1964, Oldsmobile’s Starfire convertible was the most expensive car in its lineup—priced higher than even the full size Ninety-eight.  Buyers were not disappointed with the Starfire’s luxury and performance features—many of which came standard.  And with only 2,405 convertibles originally produced, its sporty good looks and rarity make it coveted by collectors today.

Originally finished in Tahitian Yellow, this gorgeous Starfire is now finished in lustrous Ebony Black and features a White convertible top.  The paint has a mirror-like shine, and its newer convertible top is in excellent condition, with the exception of the rear plastic window, which has clouded.  Its matching interior features leather-trimmed bucket seats and a center console with tachometer.   The carpeting, center console, dashboard, and door panels are all in excellent condition, and are free of cracks or fading.  Similarly, the seats are also in excellent condition, exhibiting only minimal wear.  Best of all, this car runs and drives as beautifully as it looks, its dual exhaust 345 horsepower 394 CID V-8 moving the car with authority.

You will also appreciate this convertible’s luxury and convenience options, including tachometer, power brakes, power steering, power windows, power seat, and power top, all of which came as standard equipment on the Starfire.  This car also features several other optional items, contributing to its rarity and desirability.  These options include the following:

  • Power Ventipanes (vent windows)
  • Power door locks
  • Electric clock
  • Power antenna
  • Central control air conditioning
  • Guide-matic  power headlamp control
  • Factory-installed seat belts
  • Cruise control
  • AM/FM radio
  • Reverbatone speaker

All power options work as they should, with the exception of the air conditioning, cruise control, and radio.  At some point, the car’s air conditioning motor was removed and not replaced, although the compressor is present and functional.  Similarly, the cruise control box is no longer with the car.  These items can be returned to full functionality in the future should the necessary parts be located.  Other items of note are that the front bumper is slightly misaligned, and there is some flaking of the chrome on the front right bumper corner.  Additionally, there is some very minor pitting of the chrome, but overall condition of the chrome is very good and exhibits a bright shine.

This beautiful convertible was previously owned by Al Lerner, former Chairman of the Board of MBNA and owner of the Cleveland Browns, who kept it on display in the lobby of his office.  Mr. Lerner gave it to the most recent owner as a bonus when he worked for MBNA.  During his ownership over the last 15 years, the car was always properly maintained and stored indoors.  Recent updates over the last two years include rebuilding of the original power brake booster and fuel pump.  Now having approximately 96,000 original miles, this car will delight for many years to come, given the care it has received through the years.

If a low production and rare-optioned Starfire convertible is what you desire, this classic is for you.
