Classic Car Facts

The Studebaker Avanti was quite a car.  The creation of Raymond Loewy’s design team, it featured avant-guard styling and cutting-edge engineering.  Produced from 1963-1964 in very limited quantities—the fiberglass Avanti was fast.  Really fast.  Fast enough to reach 178 MPH in supercharged form, it broke 29 world speed records at the Bonneville Salt Flats and was the fastest production car in the world when introduced.  With just 809 produced in 1964 prior to the closure of Studebaker’s South Bend Plant, the Avanti is a collector’s dream.

Finished in Ivory Pearl Metallic base coat/clear coat, this 1964 Avanti’s finish has a beautiful luster that is further accentuated by chrome and brightwork that is in excellent condition.  Its long hood and short rear deck give it a decidedly rakish look, and its signature grille-less front end features a bottom breather design—a feature decades ahead of its time.

The interior of this Avanti is equally sporty, featuring a beautifully designed cockpit with bucket seats and a center console.  The newer red interior contrasts beautifully with the with the exterior color.  You’ll also appreciate a full complement of well organized and easy-to-read gauges, which will keep you informed about what’s going on under the hood.  Other conveniences include overhead mounted light switches, an all transistor AM radio, and optional power windows.

Starting life as an R1, this Avanti is now powered by a Paxton-supercharged 289 CID V-8 R2 engine mated to a Borg-Warner T-10 4-speed manual transmission and 3.73 rear-end.  This powertrain generates an impressive 290 horsepower and 360 ft-lbs of torque in stock form.  This was a car that was engineered for speed, as its built-in roll bar, power front disc brakes, and numerous safety features will attest.  The engine of this car was completely rebuilt less than 5,000 miles ago, and features R3 valves and flat-top aluminum pistons.  Other more recent mechanical updates include the following:

  • New front disc brake rotors & pads
  • Rebuilt power brake booster
  • New oil pump
  • New fuel pump
  • New heater core
  • New stainless-steel dual exhaust
  • Radiator boiled out & cleaned
  • Rebuilt Paxton supercharger
  • Rebuilt 4-barrel carburetor

This Avanti runs and drives as well as it looks, but could benefit from a new second gear synchronizer.  In addition, minor imperfections do not detract from the overall appearance of this car.

Part of a long-time Studebaker owner’s collection, this car has been owned by the most recent owner since 1993 and has always received the best of care.  Restoration paperwork for all work done will be provided to the next owner of this carOther Studebakers from this collection are also available, as pictured.  Please inquire.

If an ultra-rare 1960s automotive milestone is what you desire, this 1964 Studebaker Avanti is the car for you!
