390 CID V-8 … 4-speed … Go Package … 315 HP … Factory A/C … Tilt wheel … Scarab Gold Metallic exterior … Tan interior …

For those looking for an exhilarating driving experience in a 2-seater described by the automotive press in 1968 as “one of the best-looking cars — if not the best-looking car — made in the U.S.A.,” look no further than this stunning 1968 AMX.

Powered by an optional 315 HP 390 CID V-8 mated to a 4-speed manual transmission with Hurst shifter, this AMX will put you back in your seat with its 425 foot-pounds of torque.  In addition to being equipped with the most powerful engine offered by AMC in 1968, this car is also equipped with the rare factory “Go Package”—an option that included power disc brakeshigher-rate heavy-duty front and rear springs, specially calibrated heavy-duty front and rear shock absorbersTwin-Grip differential, and heavy-duty engine cooling system.  Dual exhaust and optional power steering will also add to your driving pleasure.

Finished in its original color of Scarab Gold with Black “over-the-top” racing stripes, this car’s finish has a beautiful luster.  A California car, it was stripped down to bare metal prior to a laser straight application of Dupont base coat/clear coat finish.  Further enhancing the exterior is its chrome and other brightwork, which is in excellent condition.  Optional bumper guards and brand new reproduction Magnum 500 chrome wheels complete the look.

The interior, which is finished in Saddle, tells a similar story of attention to detail, and shows only the most minimal wear.  The door panels, seating areas, dashboard, headliner, and carpeting are all in excellent condition.  The interior benefits from new seat covers and a new windshield.  You will also appreciate its original AM radio, optional “Adjust-O-Tilt” steering wheel, and ice cold “Weather-Eye” air conditioning—an option installed in only 967 of the 6,725 AMXs produced in 1968.

This stunning AMX has benefited from a more recent body-off restoration that included several performance upgrades, including the following:

  • Complete engine rebuild with under 2,000 miles
  • New Centerline clutch, pressure plate & bushing
  • Pertronix electronic ignition
  • Offenhauser aluminum intake
  • Holley 600 cfm 4 barrel carburetor
  • Ceramic coated Hooker headers
  • Flowmaster 40 Series mufflers
  • New front suspension & new rear leaf springs
  • Front end alignment
  • New 4 piston calipers & rotors
  • New brake lines
  • Rebalancing of drive shaft
  • Removal & recoating of gas tank
  • New sending unit
  • New radial tires
  • New battery

Best of all, this car runs and drives as well as it looks.

A few items of note are that the windshield wiper washer does not work, but the wipers function without issue.  In addition, the tachometer works sporadically.  Minor imperfections in the finish do not detract from the overall appearance of this car.  It should also be noted that the total mileage is unknown.

Included with sale are the original sales brochure and all owner’s, warranty and maintenance manuals.  An inflatable spare tire and jack will also be provided to the next owner of this car.

If a rare and highly collectible AMX with all the options you most covet is what you desire, this 1968 AMX is for you!
